Introducing Memo & Roly Poly Bug

This is our new pet, Nemo. Elijah declared, "Me-Mo" as soon as he saw him and the name stuck. Sarah taught JoySchool last Thursday and Elise got to bring her fish to share with the other children. Mark brought Christopher's cute gerbil to class.

I admit the JoySchool pet sharing inspired us to go get a fish! We thought, what's the cheapest & most low maintenance pet we can get? The kids are so curious about our little fish, but I think they kind of terrify him! We feed him every other day and change his water once week and that's it!

For our JoySchool class that I taught about the earth, the lesson plan suggested that I catch a bug to show the kids. I searched and searched and came up with only three ity-bity ants. Unfortunately they suffered terrible deaths after an hour at our house.

So it was rather serendipitous that Mark caught this cute little thing the morning of our class: (He certainly has a knack for catching bugs!)

I know you can't really see it but it's a roly poly bug! For some reason, it was so adorable. We forgot to give it to him to Mark when school was over so we kept it for a few days before releasing it to the wild... The kids got pretty attached!

When we finally brought it outside, Elise was really concerned for it's well-being. This was our conversation...

E: (As it gratefully crawls away.) Mom, we hide roly poly in a tree? (should we?)
Me: No, I think he'll be okay.
E: He's okay with his mommy?
Me: Hmm. Yes, maybe he'll find his mommy.
E: He's okay with his mommy in his house?
Me: Yes, I think so.
(As we approach our elevator.) E: His house have elevator?
Me: No, but don't worry, he'll be okay. : )

This is a perfect example of how Elise is the caring little sometimes overprotective mother of JS. It wouldn't be the same without her!
